In Boston. Finally. I was on the road from just after 9 this morning until about 1:15 tonight. Or, the next morning. Whatever.

It was an adventure, as ana reported.

I got out of a ticket I really deserved because I could prove my brother is a cop, and because I took responsibility for my ridiculous actions.

I mentally toasted 256 and ni (sorry ni) when I got on the Jersey Turnpike.

I nearly got creamed a couple of times by idiots in SUVs.

A bad accident turned out to be the cause of the I95 parking lot issue in Connecticut. Just after I got off the phone with ana, I read the sign that said talking on the phone while driving is illegal in CTia.

Speaking of phones, iGrrrl was right. I should've gone to Best Buy or wherever and found myself a car charger for my cell phone. It didn't seem all that crucial in the midst of everything I was trying to get done on Wednesday, though, to actually leave on time (or something resembling on time).

Even though I got to my friend's house late, we still went to some place in Virginia Beach and had a Tower of Seafood. It was quite amazingly tasty, though I prefer New England oysters to Chesapeake oysters. J and I had great conversation, and she has an amazingly cute kitty.

I've never in my life been so happy to see the Mass Pike, but I couldn't figure out how to get the first toll plaza to give me a ticket, so the nice toll woman took my money and my license plate number. In my defense, there were three booths open. Two said they were for easypass only, while the other said Autos Only. After what happened in New York, I wasn't about to risk going through the Autos Only lane. I couldn't work out the incantation of the Easypass lane -- I'm sure there was a button I was supposed to push, but by that point, I was in reaction mode, not figuring-shit-out-mode.

I nearly cried when I saw the sign for the zoo down the road from my house.

I managed to get the gigantic Penske truck into the driveway without creaming my car.

Ana kissed me, then helped me bring in plants and electronics. The rest will wait until tomorrow.

The last time I saw my house, it was Christmas day. I really thought Rocky was going to jump out of his skin when he saw me.

Rusti (my mom's dog) chased my cat, who didn't defend himself, yet. Rusti got put into a submissive position, lying on her side not facing the cat. They'll all adjust, but it will take time. Tomorrow, I'll take Rocky and Rusti for a long walk together, and then maybe I'll take them to the dog park for a run. It'll be good for all of us.

The six-ish weeks were necessary. Hard, but necessary. I'll never regret what I did, but I am so very happy to be home.

EZ-Pass, btw, is a radio transponder that mounts in the windshield. It's linked to your CC account so you don't have to pay cash for the tolls. I got one to use crossing the Bay Bridge and on the Dulles Toll Road. Very nice to have if you hit toll roads alot.

I think I've had the Tower of Seafood in Va Beach. Possibly in the same restaurant. Seafood is yummy. Especially oysters. Or soft shelled crabs.

Earth First!
(We can strip mine the rest later.)

Sorry, I didn't say that well. by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #20 Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 09:51:24 PM EST
I get what EZpass is (however it's spelled), but with the gigantic truck, it wasn't possible -- and I rarely need to use toll roads. What I meant was that there didn't seem to be a lane available that would give me a ticket for a cash toll. It was either EZPass or autos only, but not where I could get a ticket (like what the NJ Turnpike has, I guess).

Oh, and tower of seafood. by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #21 Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 09:53:07 PM EST
I love seafood, especially oysters. I haven't had a softshelled crab in forever, but that would be awesome, too. And she-crab soup. And lobster bisque. Mmmm. I think I need to drag ana out for seafood at our local awesome place. :)

My hat. by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #19 Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 09:49:06 PM EST
At least it's been in good hands. I fear I would've lost it or eaten it or something if I'd had it with me. As I said to Kellnerin, we need to have a Boston Husi lunch, and perhaps you could bring the hat. Alternatively, we could go out for drinks1 and oysters or tapas sometime soon and I could retrieve it then.
1 By drinks, I mean about 1/4 of the drinks I had the last time we went out. If I had the same number, I'd not remember to actually take my hat home.

re-read ana's updates to I struck my questions.

Hope the CBBT was scenic, if not pricey.

The CBBT... by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #10 Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 11:54:52 AM EST
was absolutely incredible. I felt like i was right on the water -- I've never driven across anything like that. In fact, all of 13N was really beautiful. It was really only when I got to NYC that the trip got difficult, and by that point, I was just exhausted.

yet almost damn frightening. It is strange being in the middle of the bay -- water all around and almost as far as you can see.. Scary when the wind is blowing and water is full of whitecaps!

Yeah. by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #13 Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 12:10:05 PM EST
The water was choppy, but fortunately not too rough. I'd have been a little more afraid if it had been windier -- that truck was like a sail. I also found it a little bit ... odd, and amusing (in a dark sort of way) that the road kill was all seagulls.

CBBT by Lady Jane (4.00 / 1) #15 Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 01:38:58 PM EST
When I drove it there was this huge tanker to my right.  After I went through the tunnel it was on the opposite side.  I thought it was the coolest thing that that mammoth ship had passed over me while I was in the tunnel.  Freaky, but cool!

If I take this trip and have time to kill I usually add the Cape May Ferry to the route.  It's beautiful, but makes for a long trip.  We saw dolphins once off the side of the ferry.

Yay for being home!!! by Lady Jane (4.00 / 1) #16 Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 01:45:31 PM EST
The road trip home is the start of your journey back to normalcy to finding the new norm.  Remember to take as long as you need and that there is no timetable.  People don't understand because they weren't there.  Everyone heals at their own pace, but there will still be people who expect you to be right as rain on day one.  Ignore them.  But I doubt you'll have too much trouble with this as you have a good support system that includes a partner and a boss who both seem to be awesome and supportive!

Welcome home!!

I keep thinking... by toxicfur (4.00 / 1) #22 Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 09:56:29 PM EST
"oh, I should remember this to tell Mama." It's what I've done for years, and I know I shouldn't expect to break that habit immediately. Still, the sadness hits hard, and yet, when I tell people that my mom has died, I find it hard to express that sadness. It's...odd, and disconcerting. I'm just rolling with it, though. It is what it is, and I know -- especially now -- that I can't second-guess what I'm feeling.

Exactly right. by Lady Jane (4.00 / 1) #26 Sun Feb 10, 2008 at 10:55:08 PM EST
Roll with it.  Allow yourself to feel what you are feeling and heal at your own pace.

I found it hard to express sadness too - even with close friends - people who weren't there just couldn't possibly get it.  Not that I gave them the chance.  It was my pain, and it was really hard to share with anyone who wasn't there.  I think it is really awesome that you shared in this forum, and am really glad that my comments were useful.

Also, the habit of wanting to share things with your mom won't break, but years from now when you have that thought it will be easier and bittersweet.  Sad, but you will smile as you think of her and what her reaction would have been.

Welcome welcome by Kellnerin (4.00 / 1) #17 Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 09:40:01 PM EST
Six weeks. Wow. It's good to have you back in the neighborhood. We ordered up some snow to make you feel back at home, but I think we messed up somehow. At a meeting this afternoon people were looking out the window asking, "Is it going to snow all weekend?"

"The snow's going up, though," someone pointed out. "It's un-snowing."*

So, sorry about that. We'll get it right next time.

--
* He went on to say, "It's wonsing" -- "snow"-ing backwards -- but I thought he was saying "It's Wahnsinn" and had suddenly started speaking German. That turned out not to be the case. Um. Anyway. Welcome back.

Thank you, thank you. :) by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #18 Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 09:46:14 PM EST
Oddly (or perhaps not -- I'm not sure anymore), I used to have the habit of reading any word I saw for more than a millisecond or so both forward and backwards. Some words taste very different when said backwards, and I think snow is one.

I think we need to have a Boston Husi lunch sometime soon. After all, ad hoc has my hat, and I definitely need it back. Plus, I would really like to see all ya'll1.

1 Yes, I have indeed been talking like that for the past month or so. I think it concerned ana a bit, but it was easier just to assimilate. At least I didn't start using nonstandard verb forms.
